Μια μέρα o γάιδαρος ενός αγρότη έπεσε σε ένα πηγάδι.

Το ζώο φώναζε απελπισμένα για ώρες κι ο αγρότης προσπαθούσε να καταλάβει τι έπρεπε να κάνει.

Τέλος, αποφάσισε ότι το ζώο ήταν γέρικο, και τα έξοδα που απαιτούνταν για να το βγάλει από το πηγάδι ήσαν πολλά.

Δεν άξιζε τον κόπο να προσπαθήσει να σώσει τον γάιδαρο. Το μόνο που σκέφτηκε να κάνει ήταν να το θάψει ζωντανό.

Κάλεσε όλους τους γείτονές του να έρθουν και να τον βοηθήσουν. Πήραν όλοι από ένα φτυάρι και άρχισαν να πετάνε χώματα στο πηγάδι. Στην αρχή, ο γάιδαρος συνειδητοποίησε τι συνέβαινε και φώναξε φρικτά. Μετά όμως, προς έκπληξη όλων, ησύχασε.

Λίγα φορτία χώμα αργότερα, ο γεωργός κοίταξε κάτω το πηγάδι κι έμεινε έκπληκτος με αυτό που είδε.

Ήταν κάτι καταπληκτικό!!!!

Με κάθε φτυαριά χώμα που έπεφτε στην πλάτη του, ο γάιδαρος τιναζόταν και έκανε ένα βήμα προς τα πάνω.

Οι γείτονες του αγρότη συνέχισαν να πετάνε φτυαριές χώμα πάνω στο ζώο, κι αυτό κάθε φορά τιναζόταν κι έκανε ένα βήμα προς τα πάνω.. Πολύ σύντομα, όλοι ήταν έκπληκτοι με το γαϊδούρι να έχει φτάσει στην επιφάνεια του πηγαδιού.

Ηθικό δίδαγμα: Η ζωή μπορεί να φέρει σε σας πολλές φτυαριές από σκουπίδια μέσα στο πηγάδι της ζωής σας. Να θυμάστε όμως πως κάθε ένα από τα προβλήματά σας αυτά είναι ένα εφαλτήριο. Μπορούμε να βγούμε από τα βαθύτερα πηγάδια απλά με ένα τίναγμα. Πατάμε πάνω στο πρόβλημα και κάνουμε ένα βήμα πάνω.

Ηθικό δίδαγμα 2: Προσοχή!  Όταν πρόκειται για γαϊδούρια (πολιτικούς) ρίχνουμε τσιμέντο ταχείας πήξεως· δεν ξέρεις τι μπορεί να γίνει.…

Το παρακάτω κείμενο περί το ύψος των χρεών στις χώρες τις Ευρώπης τα λέει όλα και δεν χρειάζεται σχολιασμό./

[Πρέπει κάποτε να τελειώσει αυτό το πολιτικό παραμύθι ότι δήθεν υπεύθυνες για τα χάλια της Ευρωζώνης είναι κάποιες «σπάταλες» και «απείθαρχες» μικρές χώρες του ευρωπαϊκού νότου που «ζουν με δανεικά» ως παράσιτα εις βάρος των «εργατικών» και «οικονομικά ενάρετων» μεγάλων κρατών-μελών της ΕΕ. Πρόκειται για εντελώς αβάσιμο ισχυρισμό, ο οποίος βρίσκεται σε κραυγαλέα αντίθεση με την αλήθεια και την ευρωπαϊκή πραγματικότητα. Μας εκνευρίζει δε φοβερά η στάση των πολιτικών της ΝΔ και του ΠΑΣΟΚ, οι οποίοι δεν αντικρούουν αυτά τα απύθμενα ψεύδη με τον απλούστατο τρόπο της παράθεσης των επίσημων στοιχείων της Γιούροστατ, της ευρωπαϊκής στατιστικής υπηρεσίας.

Εχουμε πρόχειρα τα στοιχεία για τα τελευταία 6 χρόνια, από το 2006 ως και το 2011 - και πραγματικά οι αριθμοί… βγάζουν μάτια! Ε, λοιπόν, όχι! Δεν είναι οι Ελληνες, οι Πορτογάλοι, οι Ιρλανδοί και οι υπόλοιποι… ευρω-μπατίρηδες οι μόνοι που παραβιάζουν τα κριτήρια επί των οποίων υποτίθεται ότι εδράζεται η Ευρωζώνη. Δεν είναι δηλαδή μόνο οι περιφερειακές χώρες και μάλιστα κυρίως του ευρωπαϊκού νότου που έχουν έλλειμμα πάνω από 3% και δημόσιο χρέος πάνω από 60% του ΑΕΠ τους. Είναι και η ίδια η Ευρωζώνη συνολικά, η ΕΕ στο σύνολό της, η Γερμανία η ίδια, η Γαλλία, η Ιταλία, όπως και η Βρετανία που όπως είναι γνωστό οικειοθελώς δεν συμμετέχει στο ευρώ. Επιτέλους, πρέπει να μπουν τα πράγματα στη θέση τους. Σε κανένα από αυτά τα έξι χρόνια, λοιπόν, δεν πληροί το κριτήριο του δημόσιου χρέους χαμηλότερου από 60% η ίδια η… Ευρωζώνη: 68,3% το 2006, εν συνεχεία 66,2% το 2007, αλλά και 70,1% το 2008. Ακόμη χειρότερα με 79,9% το 2009 και 85,3% το 2010, πριν φτάσουμε στο 87,2% το 2011! Εξω η Ευρωζώνη από το ευρώ, λοιπόν!

Η ΕΕ των 27 τα πάει κάπως καλύτερα: μία και μοναδική χρονιά στην εξαετία, το 2007, κατόρθωσε να ρίξει το μέσο δημόσιο χρέος της στο 59%, οριακά έστω, αλλά σίγουρα κάτω από το 60%. Τα υπόλοιπα πέντε χρόνια ήταν κι αυτά για αποβολή από το ευρώ: 61,4% το 2006 και 62,5% το 2008, πριν αρχίσει η απογείωση στο 74,8% το 2009, στο 80% το 2010 και στο 82,5% το 2011. Εξω και η ΕΕ από την Ευρωζώνη, επομένως.

Ας μη νομίσει όμως κανείς ότι είναι οι μικρές ευρωπαϊκές χώρες που ρίχνουν τον μέσο όρο της Ευρωζώνης και της ΕΕ, καταστρέφοντας την άψογη εικόνα των μεγάλων χωρών. Για να δούμε συγκεκριμένα, τι ψάρια πιάνουν αυτές, αρχίζοντας βεβαίως από τη Γερμανία. Μόλις κανείς δει τα στοιχεία, απορεί πού βρίσκει το θράσος το Βερολίνο και κουνάει το δάχτυλο απειλητικά στις άλλες χώρες, παραδίδοντάς τους μαθήματα δημοσιονομικής πειθαρχίας. Ούτε μία -κυριολεκτικά ούτε μία!- χρονιά λοιπόν δεν κατόρθωσε η Γερμανία να έχει δημόσιο χρέος κάτω από 60%. Οι αριθμοί είναι αδιάψευστη απόδειξη της επιδείνωσης του γερμανικού δημόσιου χρέους: 67,6% του ΑΕΠ το 2006 και 64,9% το 2007, αλλά και 66,7% το 2008 και 74,4% το 2009. Ακόμη ψηλότερα με 83% το 2010 και 81,2% το 2011. Σχηματικά μιλώντας, η Γερμανία έπρεπε να είχε… αποβληθεί από την Ευρωζώνη (!), αν τα κριτήρια εφαρμόζονταν αυστηρά, αφού παραβιάζει διαρκώς το κριτήριο του χρέους κάτω από 60% του ΑΕΠ όχι ένα και δύο, αλλά έξι (!) συνεχή χρόνια. Πρόκειται δηλαδή περί… αδιόρθωτης περίπτωσης ευρω-παραβάτη!

Οχι φυσικά ότι η Γαλλία είναι καλύτερη. Χρέος 63,7% το 2006 και 63,9% το 2007, ακολουθούμενο από 68,2% το 2008 και 79,2% το 2009. Δεν συζητάμε πλέον για το 82,3% του 2010 ή το 85,8% του 2011. Εξω δηλαδή και η Γαλλία από το ευρώ! Οσο για την Ιταλία, δεν νομίζουμε ότι θα αμφέβαλλε κανείς ποτέ ότι θα έπρεπε να είχε ήδη εκδιωχθεί από την Ευρωζώνη: χρέος… 106,5% του ΑΕΠ το 2006 και 103,6% το 2007, ακολουθούμενο από 105,7% το 2008 και 116% το 2009 για να καταλήξει στο 118,6% το 2010 και 120,1% το 2011. Αρα, έπρεπε να είχε ήδη αποβληθεί και η Ιταλία από την Ευρωζώνη.

Το διασκεδαστικό είναι ότι η Βρετανία, που δεν θέλει ούτε να ακούει για το ευρώ, είναι η μόνη μεγάλη χώρα που αν ήθελε θα μπορούσε να έχει μπει με το σπαθί της στην Ευρωζώνη και το 2006 (χρέος 43,5%) και το 2007 (44,5%) και το 2008 (χρέος 54,8%)! Από εκεί και πέρα, βέβαια, δεν θα μπορούσε να περάσει ούτε… απ’ έξω από την Ευρωζώνη: 69,6% το χρέος της το 2009 και 79,6% το 2010, όπως και 85,7% το 2011! Πάνε και οι Αγγλοι, «έξω» κι αυτοί…

Τη βούλιαξαν στα χρέη οι… μεγάλοι!

Η Γερμανία είναι η χώρα της Ευρωζώνης και της ΕΕ με το μεγαλύτερο… δημόσιο χρέος. Οχι σε ποσοστό του ΑΕΠ, αλλά σε απόλυτο ποσό, καθώς χρωστάει πάνω από 2… τρισεκατομμύρια ευρώ - 2,088 τρισ. ευρώ για την ακρίβεια! Ακόμη και η Ιταλία χρωστάει λιγότερα από τη Γερμανία - 1,9 τρισεκατομμύρια ευρώ. Εκεί κοντά τους, στην τρίτη θέση, βρίσκεται και η Γαλλία με το δημόσιο χρέος της να ξεπερνάει το 1,717 τρισ. ευρώ. Πολύ, πάρα πολύ λιγότερα χρωστάει η Ισπανία - μόλις 735 δισεκατομμύρια ευρώ. Προσθέτοντας το δημόσιο χρέος των τεσσάρων μεγαλύτερων οικονομιών της Ευρωζώνης βλέπουμε ότι χρωστούν τα 6,44 τρισ. ευρώ από τα 8,215 που χρωστάει συνολικά η Ευρωζώνη. Δηλαδή οι τέσσερις μεγαλύτερες χώρες χρωστούν… τρεις φορές περισσότερα από όσα οι υπόλοιπες 13 της Ευρωζώνης! Τα μεγάλα κράτη δηλαδή είναι αυτά που μας βούλιαξαν στα χρέη, όχι τα μικρά!]

“Why does he do that?” “What is she so scared of … there’s nothing there!” Most—if not all—horse owners have asked those questions. Even though we don’t always understand equine behavior, there’s got to be a reason behind it, right? Absolutely. Horses’ behavior dates back to equine evolution and owners benefit from an understanding what goes on in a horse’s brain, according to one vet. At the 2012 Western Veterinary Conf. held Feb. 19-23 in Las Vegas, Robert Miller, DVM, former equine practitioner from Thousand Oaks, Calif., relayed the top 10 things horse owners, caretakers, and riders should understand about how the equine mind functions. “There are 10 genetically predetermined behavioral qualities unique to the horse that have been established by natural selection over its 50 million-year of evolution. “Failure to understand these qualities makes it impossible to have optimum communication with horses.”

1.       Flight—”We tend to attribute the flightiness of a horse as stupidity but when horses spook and run from things, it’s simply their innate instincts kicking in. Unlike the majority of prey animals that depend on horns, tusks, or antlers for defense, the only mechanism horses are armed with—their “life-saving” behavior—is the ability to run. The following nine qualities stem from the horse’s flight response.
 

2. Perception—The horse is the most perceptive of all domestic animals, and this quality allowes for the quick detection and escape from predators in the wild. He gave examples using the five senses:
   • Smell—Miller said horses have an “excellent” sense of smell.
   • Hearing—”The horse’s range of hearing is far beyond that of a human ear,” he said. Additionally, he noted, the ears swivel, giving the horse the ability to pinpoint where sounds originate. This was critical for survival in the wild.
   • Touch—A horse’s sense of touch is extremely delicate, which is why an ill-placed saddle or a single fly can cause extreme irritation. The sense we have in our fingertips is what the horse has all over his body.
   • Taste—Ever tried to sneak Bute or a new supplement into a horse’s feed, only to have him turn up his nose? Horses have a very tactful sense of taste. When grazing in the wild, it’s important for horses to differentiate between good grass and moldy forage.
   • Sight—The sense that varies most from ours is the horse’s eyesight. While horses’ depth perception isn’t particularly strong, other factors enable them to “see things we’re not even aware of”. The horse’s laterally placed eyes allow for nearly 360° vision, a crucial survival mechanism in the wild. Additionally, the horse has superb night vision and sees in muted, pastel colors during the day. The equine focusing system is also different from humans. When a human eye transitions from focusing on close-up objects to far away objects, it takes one and a half to two seconds to adjust (Miller encouraged attendees to try it—look at something close up and then look at something far away, and try to focus on how long it takes the eyes to focus). Horses, on the other hand, make the transition seamlessly. This is because different parts of the eye have different focusing capabilities. Horses use the top portion of their eyes to see up close, which is why they often lower their heads when investigating something. The lower portion of the eye sees far away, which is why the animal will raise his head when looking at something in the distance; when the horse holds his head up high, he’s considered to be in the flight position.
      

3.       Reaction Time—Miller said horses might have the fastest reaction time of any domestic animal, which likely results from evolving with flight as their main defense mechanism. To illustrate the concept, Miller showed video clips of Portuguese bull fighting and cutting horses working cattle, in which attendees could clearly visualize that although the bovines made the first move, the horse always countered and arrived at the destination first. While a fast reaction time is quite useful for escaping predators, it can also be dangerous for humans working around horses. “It’s important that we, who make our living with horses, expect their reaction time,” Miller stressed. “If (a horse) really wants to strike or kick you, you can’t get out of the way fast enough.”
 

4. Desensitization—Although it’s equine nature to be flighty and sometimes timid, Miller said that horses appear to be desensitized faster than any other domestic animal. “If an animal depends on flight to stay alive, and if they couldn’t rapidly desensitize to things that aren’t really frightening or dangerous, they’d never stop running,” he explained. As long as the horse learns the frightening stimulus doesn’t actually hurt them, the majority will become desensitized, he said.
   
5. Learning—Miller believes “the horse is the fastest learner of all domestic animals—including children. If you stay alive by running away, you better learn fast.”
    
6. Memory—The horse’s memory is infallible, Miller said. One of the best memories in the animal kingdom, he noted, horses are second only to the elephant in this department.
    
7. Dominance—Equine dominance is not based on brute strength, which is why humans can become dominant figures in a horse’s mind. Example: a horse herd in which an older mare is typically the boss. While these mares generally aren’t in poor physical condition, they’re certainly not the strongest herd member physically.
    
8. Movement Control—What horses do look for in a dominant figure is movement control. Matriarch mares assert their dominance by either forcing or inhibiting movement, which allows a human to step in as a dominant figure. A quick way for a veterinarian to assert dominance over a horse for safer examinations and treatments: Before treatment, walk the horse in a few small circles. This forces movement and asserts dominance.
    
9. Body Language—Unlike humans who can express their feelings through words, horses rely on body language. If we are to be good horse handlers we must be able to understand and mimic the body language of the horse.
   
10. Precocious Birth—Horses are born in a precocious state, meaning that shortly after birth they possess the ability to move, eat, flee, and follow, and all of their senses and neurologic functions are mature. What does this mean for a human? Aside from providing enjoyment in watching a young foal gallop and buck excitedly around a pasture, it tells us that the horse’s critical learning period takes place shortly after parturition. Thus, it is highly recommended to socialize and imprint foals in the very early stages of life.

Of course, every horse is different and should be treated as an individual. That said, having a basic understanding of why a horse functions the way he does provides equestrians with the knowledge needed to forge a strong relationship with the animal and also stay safe when working around him.

February 17 2012. Quarter Horse Genome Sequenced

What is a fitting anniversary gift for an international team of geneticists and a Thoroughbred mare called Twilight, who sacrificed a small sample of DNA to have her chromosomes sequenced in their entirety five years ago? Why, a second fully sequenced equine genome, of course. A Texas A&M University research team led by Scott Dindot, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, recently finished sequencing, or mapping, the genome of an 18-year-old Quarter Horse mare called Sugar. Further, Dindot and colleagues compared Sugar’s genomic map to Twilight’s and found over 3 million differences, called genetic variants. Many of these differences were present in genes involved in sensory perception, signal transduction (inside and between cells), and immunity.

“We also found that the mare had a different number of copies of some genes relative to Twilight, which has nοτ been reported in horses before,” Dindot relayed. “We recently completed another study looking at these copy number variants (CNVs) to help determine what the differences in copy numbers between different horse breeds mean. For example, CNVs cause many diseases in humans, and we suspect that the same might be true in horses, but more research is needed.”  In addition, the team reported using updated “second generation” techniques to create the genomic map. “The technology we used is less expensive than that used for Twilight, and the cost of this technology is decreasing at a remarkable rate; the goal is to be able to sequence a genome for approximately $1,000,” said Dindot. “This is being driven by efforts in human medicine.”

Other than serving as a great conversation starter, what benefit would DNA sequencing bring to the average horse owner? “Genomic maps will allow us to investigate the genetic basis of disease in horses and to understand the genetic basis of particular traits, such as those distinguishing individual horses and breeds,” explained Dindot. “This technology may also be used to help predict and manage diseases in horses. For example, the health care of a horse may be tailored depending on its genetic makeup. This is often referred to as ‘personalized’ medicine.”

According to geneticist Ernie Bailey, PhD, professor of veterinary science at the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Equine Research Ctr., this research is not simply a case of reinventing the wheel. “Having a map of more than one horse’s genome is important,” he said. “It is the equivalent of having the engineering specifications for a car. Does it matter which car the specifications are for? After all, all cars have wheels, engines, doors, etc., but each model of car is unique “The horse’s genome sequence is the same,” he continued. “In general all horses share DNA sequence and organization but there can be major rearrangements in the genes from horse to horse.”

An excellent example of major rearrangements of DNA in horses is the tobiano spotting pattern caused by a large section of DNA (3 million base pairs) on equine chromosome 3 that runs in the opposite direction on Sugar’s DNA when compared to Twilight’s. “Scott’s publication is another landmark for horse research and heralds a new approach to discovery,” Bailey added. “At the recent horse genome workshop meeting in January 2012, scientists from laboratories around the world reported that whole genome sequencing of seven more horses was either completed or underway. As we learn more about these and other horse genomes, we will be able to discover what makes a successful performance horse. Returning to the car analogy, we will be able to ‘look under the hood.’ In collaboration with other groups, we will continue to sequence more horse genomes to catalog most of the genetic variation in horses. We will also continue to investigate CNVs to understand their role in disease and traits in horses,” Dindot added.
